40k Battle Report: Eldar/Tau Vs. Chaos Space Marines

As open play at my FLGS comes to a close, I think I've finally got a good handle on the new Eldar and Tau codexes. I'm really enjoying the parings and combos I can make with both books, especially when allied with each other or Grey Knights. Last week I got to play a game against my good buddy Sqouze. He's a great dude and one of the best modelers I've ever met. Be sure to swing by /r/Warhammer on Reddit and take a look at some of his work.

I won the rolls for deployment and to go first.

I deployed as seen in the picture. Jetbikes and Dire Avengers were kept in reserve.

He deployed as seen here. Khorne Berzerkers and Khorne Lord in the Land Raiders. His Obliterators were in a forest near the edge of the board and can be seen in the first picture. He kept both units of Cultists in reserves. He attempted to seize but failed. Womp! Womp!

Turn 1: All powers go off and the Seer Council becomes unstoppable. Prescience on the Warp Spiders and Guide on the Wraithknight. The Riptide's nova charge is successful and he boosts the Ion Accelerator The Warp Spiders and Seer Council move up to surround the relic. The Riptide shoots at the bikes and tries to clip the Landraider but scatters off. He still manages to kill a good deal of bikes. The Wraitknight strips a hull point from the Landraider near the bikes and shakes it.

The bikes move forward. The shaken Landraider moves up 12" with the bikes moving up behind it as cover. His other Landraider moves up and unloads right in my face. Khorne Berzerkers take shots into the Seer Council and everything bounces off. He forgets to fire his Obliterators and shots from the Landraider do a couple wounds to the Wraithknight. The Berzerkers charge and loose a couple models on the way in. The champion challenges and my warlord Farseer accepts thinking that I'll make easy work of him. The Farseer wounds him 2 times but he makes both saves. The Warlocks kill a couple models. My roll to save wounds caused by the Berzerkers is piss poor, and I roll at least eight or more 1's on my saves. I was stunned to say the least. I take my reroll for Fortune and still roll two 1's again, killing 2. This is the most damage anyone has done to my Seer Council since I started using it. Both units are Fearless so combat continues.

Turn 2: Dire Avengers and Jetbikes come in from reserve and enter near the middle of the board. All powers on the Seer Council are successful. Guide on the Warp Spiders. Nova Charge on the riptide fails and he takes a wound. Warp Spiders move forward. Wraithknight shoots at the Landraider wrecking it. The Berzerkers and Khorne Lord pile out. Shots from the Fire Warriors, Riptide, and Warp Spiders kill off the the Berzerkers and the Lord. Shots from the Broadsides finish off the bikes and Nurgle Lord. The Seer Council really poops the bed this round and only kills 1 Berzerker and the Champion and Farseer both fail to do anything in the challenge.

A Heldrake and a unit of Cultists come in. He out flanks near his Obliterators in the back. His Heldrake flew on and roached the unit of Warp Spiders killing all but 1. Obliterators fail to hit anything. His Landraider puts a couple more wounds on the Wraithknight. The single Warp Spider fails his leadership and falls back. One Berzerker dies in the combat with the Seer Council and the Champion makes his saves to stay in the challenge. That guy was a total super man.

Turn 3: All powers go up except Fortune. Guide on the Jetbikes. Jetbikes fly towards the Cultists and Obliterators. Dire Avengers make their move for the relic. Shooting from the Broadsides kills the Heldrake. All of the Berzerkers are killed off in the assault except for that pesky Champion. He makes his saves in the challenge.

Another unit of Cultists out flanks near the previous group. Shooting kills one biker.

Turn 4: All powers go off. Nova Charge fails on the Riptide and he takes a wound. Dire Avengers move up and take the relic. Jetbikes move up and shoot the cultists. Shooting kills a couple cultists. The jetbikes assault in and we both loose one model. The Farseer finally manages to cut down the Super Amazeballs Champion in the challenge and the Seer Council is free.

His final Heldrake comes on and poops on the Dire Avengers knocking them off of the relic. The lone bike is killed on the combat with the Cultists.

Turn 5-6: The next 2 turns wouldn't get any better for my opponent. Broadsides, Wraithknight, and Riptide would kill his Heldrake and Landraider. While I lost little to nothing. The game would end with the Eldar/Tau winning 3 to 0 thanks to secondary objectives.

A rough game for my buddy Sqouze. He did however manage to get more wounds on my 2 monsterous creatures and kill more Seer Council members than any opponent I've faced with this army so far. I will definitely be running the Shard of Anaris on my Warlord from now on and perhaps the Fire Saber on my other Farseer just so I don't get stuck in a challenge again like I did this game. I'm stoked for my league game tonight. It's the start of 2 headed giant. Makers and I will be playing Eldar/Tau of course.

  1. It seems that Tau\Eldar is the combo to beat at the moment. I have not seen much from the SM codex that can challenge this. Good report. I agree that Sqouze's stuff is amazing.

  2. Good battle rep- you certainly get value for money with the Tau/Eldar combo. As a CSM player, wonder if I'd have taken the Landraiders or gone for Havocs and Preds to try bring down the big guys.
